The Routine Habits for Writing a New Post

Do you think that all famous writers have magical tricks to writing new posts, blogs and books? We agree that the writing habits of famous writers help them write more and put out work on time, but these tricks are not magical.

Most writing habits of famous writers are very mundane and routine tasks that they develop over time to help them become better writers. When new writers fail to have such a routine, this can become a major cause of writer’s block

Many people are writers, they are passionate as well, but they still fail to show output. Why does it happen? One of the biggest reasons behind this is a lack of routine. The market is flooded with content, so if you want to stand out, you have got to step up your writing game. To grow a passion, the best way to handle it is to bring discipline into your life as a writer.

Routine is essential when you want to convert your writing into a business and earn money. Why? When you do commission work, people will not wait for you to have a sudden burst of creativity. You need to function like a well-oiled machine that can write/work as per demand. In this article, we will discuss some of these habits to help you understand.

Top 11 habits that will help in writing a new post

What are some of the easiest things that writers can do to write a new post? How do they get over their mental barriers to write better? Let us find out some of these tricks to help you get over your blocks.

1. Observe everything around you to find new content

When you see or find new things around you, stay observant. Take these experiences as the first step of research. The word “Roh Stoff” in German means raw material. They have said that the raw material for writing and creating content is already present in the world. You just have to observe them, understand them and then create a piece on them.

Even if you do not directly write about this experience you have, you can take inspiration from it. You can also take inspiration from what you see in others’ lives and develop a new story or article on it. The main idea is to keep an open heart and mind to live new things and retain information about them.

2. Start by writing about what you know

This is one of the good writing habits for students who are just starting out as writers. All famous writers always say that when you are a new writer, it is always better to write about things you know. You can also write about things you have experienced or felt. Why? This will have lesser chances of factual mistakes, and you will stay on your track. Describing your own story is much easier than writing content based on pre-set briefs. So, from the beginning itself, do not try to climb the highest mountain; rather, start out small.

3. Set a particular time for writing

A skilled writer who wants to take up writing as a profession and wants to write new posts regularly must set a time for writing. When it is not a 9 – 5 job, it can be very easy to get lost and distracted by small things and lose track of time. So, you must have a routine in your life where you dedicate a few hours to writing. Even if you have other things to do, make sure you use your set time for writing and then move on to other things.

4. Write every day

As Haruki Murakami says, we all must remember that repetition is the most important thing for a writer. So, make sure you write every day or you sit down at your desk to write. Even if you can not write what you intended, write something. Most writers always insist that you must accept that first drafts are never good. But you should never stop writing because of that. In fact, write every day to better your skills.

Believe in your skills and remember only practice will make you perfect. So, keep writing every single day, even if just a few words. Do not measure your writing by other people’s standards. Write as much as you can write as a writer; if that is very less, it is still a step in the right direction.

5. You have to conduct in-depth research

Research is the greatest armour for a writer. As a writer, you must conduct in-depth research about everything you write about. You can not publish an article like a half-baked cake with a half-hearted effort. You must always conduct your own research to prepare yourself for the writing process. Doing research does not always have to end and start with books. You can read other articles and research pieces, watch videos, listen to podcasts, and do multiple other things for research.
When you research a lot, there can be too much information on your plate, which can be overwhelming. You can easily make notes of these or record your screen while watching a video with Windows 11 screen recorder. Remember, never lose your research; this is the backbone of any good writing piece. So, always keep your research close and make sure you have proof of this research in some form or the other.

6. Remove all small distractions

Small distractions can become a major roadblock for writers. Before you know it, you will have spent hours on social media without writing even one single line. When you sit down to write, you must remove all distractions. For this to work, you must create a working space for yourself. Dress it up the way you feel comfortable. Get a comfortable writing chair, table, or writing lap, and make your own cozy space.

You do not necessarily need to follow set guidelines to make a workspace. But it is absolutely necessary that you have a workspace, be it of any kind. Work in the garden, work in the backyard, work inside an office or in the study. Work wherever your mind stays fresh and can think without distractions. You can also start meditation to gather your thoughts to improve your concentration and thinking abilities.

7. Set yourself a concrete deadline

When you are in between a creative process, especially writing, time can fly by. It is important you set yourself a concrete deadline to complete your work. But set deadlines according to your own capabilities, and do not try to overwork, which might become redundant. Do not set deadlines to other writers’ guidelines; personalise your deadlines for better results. Have realistic expectations from yourself; this will reduce your frustrations and increase your productivity as a writer.

You can try to set yourself daily, weekly, and monthly deadlines and keep checking to see if you have kept up with them. But never be harsh on yourself in case some of these deadlines fail. You have to make sure that all of the deadlines do not fail. Some of them can fail because it is a creative process, and some writing pieces can take more time than expected. Use these deadlines as KPIs as a writer and see how much output you have. When you know your output capacity, you can also pick up work accordingly. If you can not produce more than one post a day, you can choose to write only one.

8. Develop healthy life habits and keep your mind fresh

Brain fogging is a real thing that many scientists have found concrete evidence of. Brain fogging can happen due to multiple reasons like COVID-19, lack of food, sleep, or even proper hydration.

  • So, as a writer, it is important that you develop a few healthy habits to keep your brain functioning at its best.
  • To avoid brain fogging and stop your mind from getting tired, eat healthy, sleep well, and meditate.
  • Make sure you spend some quality time doing things other than writing.
  • Other creative things like movies, art, music, and other things can refresh your mind and relax you.

You can also start exercising or meditation to refresh your mind. See what activity works for you to keep your mind healthy and do these activities regularly. Do not let writing overcrowd your mind. If you feel too much is on your plate and you are overwhelmed, take a proper break. Take your mind off the writing piece and think about other things.

Writers tend to find inspiration in the smallest and weirdest of things, so try out new things to get inspired. You can also reward yourself with some well-deserved breaks in case you are tired due to excess work. Refrain from pushing your boundaries too much, or it might cause long-term writer’s block.

9. Follow other notable writers/bloggers/authors

Art or writing is something that can not happen in isolation. One of the greatest habits of a good writer is to follow and read the works of other writers regularly. You have to find inspiration, and what is a better way to get inspired than other fellow writers’ works?

Try to read others’ books, articles, blogs, and even newspaper articles to stay updated with the industry standard. Even great social media or print advertisements can inspire writing pieces. Follow any writing work that resonates with you to help your personal growth.

Choose the writers who inspire you the most. Follow the kind of things they write about, and understand the literary skills they use. These will help you develop your skills as a writer. Writers who have become famous, writers who can connect well with their readers, what and how do they write? Get an in-depth understanding of this to know what kind of content works best in the current market.

10. Take notes when you see or experience new things

When people experience new things, they tend to forget about keeping some evidence about them. What do you do when a life situation or a random occurrence inspires you to write something, but you do not have your pen and paper? Just take out your phone and make a note of it on a notepad. Or click a picture of the thing that inspires you. If you are good at remembering, make a mental note. But our chain of thoughts can get distracting with a thousand different things happening in a day. It is better to keep your own personal notes and evidence to reflect on them.

11. Keep a journal

There comes a time in every writer’s life when they fail to find inspiration or new ideas for writing. Do not give up in such situations. Even if you feel low about the non-inspired work, write about them. These do not have to be great writing pieces; not everything you write can win an award, but make sure you put these thoughts down in a journal. Then, write about how you attempted to overcome this non-inspired phase.

The journal-keeping activity has two purposes. One, you keep up with your habit of writing regularly, even if the content quality is not as desired. Second, when you look back at this journal, you will see how you worked through these issues to get out of your writer’s block. Your own journey will inspire you at a later time and can easily help you generate new content ideas.

Parting Thoughts

Both new writers and experienced writers can take inspiration from these habits and include at least a few of them in their lives. At the beginning itself, it might be hard to incorporate all of them, but you have to begin somewhere. Start by using one or two of these habits and see the positive changes for yourself. These are tried and tested routine habits that most writers swear by. Once few of these habits work, start practicing all of the ones we mentioned above.

We hope they will help you grow as a writer and will help you write new pieces regularly. Happy writing!
